How many times have you heard this response to a tragedy, a disappointment, or even a minor annoyance: “Well, there’s a reason for everything.” Interestingly, when people say this, it usually means they don’t have a reason. A typical follow-up is, “I don’t know what the reason is, but…”

The day after Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated, I saw that my older brother had made a sign in his bedroom that said, “He has risen.” I didn’t know if he thought MLK was a messiah or if he meant it in a more general, hopeful sense. I never asked him. Till now.
