Meet the Hollowheads

Standard

One night at Burning Man, Scot and I were cycling into the suburbs (I think it was the 3:00 plaza) and came across Bad Idea Theater. BIT is a movie theater in a tent that we’d visited several times at previous burns, usually with good results. This year it exceeded expectations. We walked in maybe half-way or two-thirds of the way through “Meet the Hollowheads.” I can’t believe I’d never even heard of this 1989 film, because I love weird movies, and this one is really exceptional.

It takes place in some kind of colorful indoor world where all services depend on transport through tubes. Tubes are of utmost importance, and yes, you get a little tired of all the references to tubes, but that doesn’t matter. It’s like “The Jetsons” merged with “The Addams Family” and then blended with some dystopian science fiction/horror movie. Funny, utterly unpredictable, bad in a good way, ridiculous, surreal, and always entertaining. I give it four mutated thumbs up.

The clip included here is a part that we missed that night, so it’s a real treat for me. That chicken-trombone, or whatever it is, adds a little depth to the young man’s character. This is probably the only musical number, but a good representation of what to expect.
