It was a beautiful afternoon and Volunteer Park was a fine place to be for an outdoor play. The promo on the website made it sound like this version of Hansel and Gretel would be somewhat adult and darkly comic, but it was very much a kid’s show. Nothing wrong with a kid’s show. Plenty of energy and kid-pleasing features such as people running through the audience and lots of shrieking. There were some bits of clever dialog for adults, too.
Though it was only an hour it would have been more successful as a shorter play because the plot was kind of thin and scattered. The story could have gotten by just fine with fewer characters and some editing. But don’t get me wrong, live theater in the park is a wonderful thing and I was happy to drop a donation in a hat afterwards. Support local theater!
