I really enjoyed the new Lincoln movie. I was afraid the Spielberg would do what he so often does and make it smarmy and sappy. Only the first scene of soldiers reciting the Gettysburg address at him really bothered me. After that it was nicely told political drama. Lincoln’s eloquence came through very nicely.
What we need now is a modern-day global Lincoln who can move the entire world toward climate change mitigation. Check out recent news from NASA regarding the extent of ice melting in Antarctica and Greenland. The pace of ice loss in Greenland today is five times what it was in the 1990s. This is disturbing. History records episodes of very rapid changes in climate and we seem to be in the midst of one. The earth will be just fine but the seven billion humans are going to have a tough time with getting everyone food and water. Not to mention the problem of tropical diseases moving into former temperate zones. Wouldn’t it be great if we could stand up on our hind legs and take responsibility for ourselves rather than letting nature cull the population?
