One of my favorite podcasts, Big Picture Science, recently released an excellent episode on scientific research funding. The show reveals real-world effects on research of the recent government shutdown. It also discusses government funding, private funding, public/private partnerships, and talks to a variety of scientists and interested parties.
One Nobel-prize-winning professor says that he recommends that his post-docs go abroad, where science is supported in a stronger way, especially for young people. The episode is a very interesting look at the current state of research in the U.S. and where it might be headed.
