Went to a very fun show last night at the Columbia City Theater. It featured lots of fine musicians, including Hounds of the Wild Hunt, Robert Deeble, Gibraltar, and others. As expected and desired (by me), the show leaned heavily on the Velvet Underground years, although we did get “Open House” from Songs for Drella and loud, metal versions of “Vicious” and “Satellite of Love.” Among my favorites was a fine rendition of “Sweet Nuthin” that made me appreciate the song more than I had in the past. There was also a manic, blood-curdling performance of “Heroin.”
It’s pretty much always a good idea for musicians to get together and do their favorite Lou Reed material. You don’t need an excuse like the man dying in order to do this.
