comet sighted off the starboard bow

Standard

The European Space Agency’s Rosetta mission took this photo, and another science fiction dream becomes real. Click on it to enlarge. The ship is preparing to send a lander to the surface of this comet (called Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenkoin) in November.  Thanks to Bad Astronomy blog for calling my attention to the image. The comet is 50 kilometers away in this photo, and comet itself is 3.5 to 4 kilometers long. It’s got an odd shape.
