A recent article on BBS News reports on new findings confirming that chimpanzees in the wild kill each other. It’s triggered or worsened when neighboring troops are competing for scarce resources. There’s been controversy among researchers about this. One scientist is quoted:
“I’m very glad they’re publishing this,” he told BBC News. It answers a “long, long history of resistance”, Prof de Waal explained, to the idea of natural, inter-community violence in chimpanzees.
This is my favorite part:
“It has always been contentious – we’ve had meetings where people screamed at each other.”
Fill in your own joke here about researchers flinging bananas (and worse) at each other, screaming, and threatening each other over whether chimps would kill.
